My 20(in)12 Year in Review - Part 1

I have to say, 2012 was one of the better years I've had in a LONG time.  I had many "firsts" in my professional/personal life, and managed to tuck a few new achievements under my fitness belt, so to speak.

I'm a goal-oriented person and always looking for something new to try.  Earlier in the year, I committed to reaching 20 (mostly) fitness-related goals in 12 months - aka 20(in)12 - and I'm proud to say that I DID!

Many of these were bucket list goals but a few were simply things I decided to do spontaneously.  Some required training and preparation, whereas others were just fun activities... although, I had to muster up some serious courage for a couple of them!

My 20(in)12 Goals: #'s 1-10

#1. Went snowboarding and perfected the art of not falling while exiting the chair lift

I managed to hit the slopes 4 times in 2012 for my 1st ever snowboarding season.  I wasn't a big skier so it wasn't like I was completely switching gears or anything.  Although I could make it down the mountain without falling, I decided to take a lesson at the end of the year to actually learn technique and get better. Happy to say that I'm starting to get the hang of it!

#2. Perform 10 bodyweight chin-ups
This is one of my proudest accomplishments from 2012 and I'm still doing them on a regular basis.  The picture above is my chin-up bar at home... no excuses!!  I firmly believe this is one of the best bodyweight exercises you can do... click here to find out why.

#3. Compete in my 2nd bikini competition and make it to Top 5
I competed in the OCB Spirit of America Competition in April and not only did I make it to the Top 5 in the Masters Division... I cracked the Top 3 in the Novice Division!  I rewarded myself with macadamia white chocolate chip pancakes, bacon and white toast for breakfast the next morning.... worth every bite ;)

#4. Start my blog
I try to write thoughts for my blog posts whenever I find the opportunity.  The above picture was from one of my favorite blog post brainstorming locations this year, while watching the sunrise on a boat in Vineyard Haven. I started my blog in April but didn't begin regularly posting until August.  I'm proud of what I've written thus far and currently brainstorming new ideas for 2013... unfortunately, from my desk... not a boat :)

#5. Go Sailing
I went above and beyond with this one because I didn't just sail, I went sailboat RACING!  I was lucky to be on the winning sailboat in the annual Memorial Day Figawi Race. Sailboat racing takes stress to a whole new level... not to mention, I had bruises all up my shins from sliding across the top of the cabin each time we tacked. (I truly thought I was going to slide straight into the water a couple of times!) But as I found out, it's really just a race to the showers so everyone can then go party :)

#6.  Take my 1st trip to Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket
I've lived in Massachusetts my whole life and had never been to the outer Cape Cod islands.  Not only was I lucky enough to visit BOTH Nantucket and MV this year, I traveled via a 35-foot Alberg sailboat each time (shown in the above picture).  It was so fun exploring these beautiful islands and I can't wait to go back, regardless of my mode of transportation :)

#7. Go for a bike ride
I hadn't been on a bike in years... since 2002, to be exact, when I competed in my 1st sprint triathlon. Last year, I went both mountain biking and "pleasure" biking.   It was my first experience with mountain biking and really fun!  I went with riders much more experienced (and daring) than me but I was able to keep up... OK, the more likely story is they were choosing to "take it easy" :)

I also took a long, relaxing bike ride when I was in Nantucket, from one side of the island to the other. The above picture shows Sankaty Lighthouse in 'Sconset, which was one of many gorgeous views along the bike path.

#8. Compete in an obstacle/adventure course race
I competed in the Fenway Park Spartan Race in October... and it was awesome!  I can't wait to do it again.  This picture shows my most grueling event... the 60# sandbag carry up and down the entire bleacher section of Fenway. Holy crap, my traps were feeling this event for days afterwards.  Read my entire recap here!

#9. Become affiliated with professional fitness organizations/groups
In 2012, I became an ambassador for both SweatPink and Greatist.  I also became an affiliate for LiveWell 360.  All of these groups share the same fitness and health philosophy as I do and I couldn't be more honored to be aligned with them.  Stay tuned for future posts about these amazing organizations!

#10. Go zip-lining
Zip-lining was scary and exhilarating at the same time.... and I say that as someone with a fear of heights. I wouldn't say doing it cured my fear but each run did get a little bit easier to anticipate.  I am SO happy that I did it and wrote all about it here.
